Audiobook Review: 'A Sucky Love Story: Overcoming Happily Ever After' by Brittani Louise Taylor

Saturday, August 3, 2019

I can remember discovering Brittany Louise Taylor when watching Shane Dawson’s YouTube videos in middle school. I’m almost positive I was subscribed to her YouTube channel at some point, but eventually moved on to other content. While looking for a new audiobook to listen to, I saw her memoir in my recommendations and decided to give it a try. Today, I’m going to give you my review of A Sucky Love Story: Overcoming Happily Ever After by Brittani Louise Taylor.

About the Audiobook

Brittani Louise Taylor, a popular Youtuber, has tried all of the traditional dating apps with zero luck. After a recent breakup, she tries Tinder one more time and matches with Milos. Milos is textbook marriage material. He’s from Europe, a doctor, athletic, and wealthy. However, nothing seems quite right him. Brittani doesn’t trust her gut until it’s almost too late.

The audiobook is narrated by the author, Brittani Louise Taylor. The audio runs 7 hours and 3 minutes. 40 seconds of the book are end credits. Most of the chapters are around the 25-minute mark, but there are a couple around 30+ minutes.

What I Like

The shining star of this book is the story. As I was listening, I found myself getting drawn into this wild ride. The pacing and suspense of the story are great because of Taylor’s ability to give you enough information to cause suspicion of Milos' intentions, but still draw you back to feeling “in love” with him. Taylor also does a great job of answering all of the reader’s possible questions to the best of her ability. By the time you get to the end of the book, everything is tied up, leaving me feeling satisfied. Most of the book made me feel like I was watching a true-crime TV show and screaming at the character to wake up before they are murdered.

Because of the way the story is paced and the description of the author’s emotions, I binged this book in two days. It was a fast read that I don’t regret purchasing at all. If you are into true-crime or love gone wrong, you will love this book.

What I Dislike

As far as things I dislike about this book, keep in mind I’m being very nitpicky. The one thing that I struggled with is some of the narration of “jokes” or passages that were supposed to be funny. These passages seemed forced and the joke didn’t translate well. I’m sure If I were reading the physical book, it would have been fine. However, as an audiobook, these passages were cringeworthy.

Another notable thing is that this isn’t the most eloquently written book. It’s not distracting as an audiobook because it sounds like a friend telling you a story, but I believe the lack of good grammar and lack of good word choice could annoy some people. Just keep in mind your reading taste when checking this book out.

Final Rating

My final rating for the audiobook version of A Sucky Love Story: Overcoming Happily Ever After would be 4 out of 5 stars. This book was one of my guilty pleasures for a few days and I enjoyed it immensely. The story kept me engaged and on the edge of my seat. This book doesn’t make 5 stars because of the weird narration moments, but it's a great read to add to your TBR list!
